Hi, if you're on this page, you've probably already figured out that you're on Joel E. Bousley's personal web site. (Actually, it's really more like an online interactive resume for employers and potential freelance clients, but that's between you and me...) I won't bore you with details about where I was born and when, but suffice it to say, I've been around the bend. I've seen over 30 summers at this point, so that could explain why I'm less willing to recount what I've been up to for so long. So, I'll just keep this along the lines of a stream-lined introduction to me.
My family is very important to me, and I will happily volunteer that I'm a proud father of two and husband. My son, Alex, is almost four years old -- and depending on his current costume occassionally refers to me as "Superhero" or "Cowboy" Daddy. My daughter has a pretty healthy vocabulary at nearly two years old -- unfortunately my wife and I understand precious little of it. Amanda, my wife, seems to constantly be trying to operate her own small zoo as she has ferrets, sugargliders, cats and dogs. Needless to say, road trips across the country are most interesting with the Bousley clan. Enough of the personal -- how about the professional?
As you can no doubt tell from having read my resume, I'm someone with a wide variety of skill-sets. I cannot be easily classified or categorized or stuffed into a neat little box for that matter. One question that I often get at interviews is, "Do you consider yourself more of a web designer or web developer?" A difficult question to answer each and every time, because the simple fact of the matter is that it depends the skill-set I need to complete a task, and -- to a lesser degree -- the time of day, wind direction, and what phase the moon is currently in...
There are times when I feel like dealing with the subjective and any feedback that might come of such -- at such times I am most definitely in a web designer mind set. Yet at other times I want to focus on what can be logically derived, broken down into a series of steps, and therefore objectified as a means to an end -- at such times I am most assuredly in a web developer mind set. That being said, on most days I am in the mood to blend the two sides of my professional personality to create products that are equal parts subjective and equal parts objective. Hence, my slogan,"blending web design and development since 1995"!
Over the years, I have developed my own principles when it comes to doing my job. The largest of which is to push the design and programming fields to exceed -- not just meet -- the expectations of my employers, co-workers, and clients. Perhaps my dedication to never stop learning is an even more important indication of the kind of developer and designer I am. This means many hours spent in my office reading, tinkering, and pushing my gray matter to the limit, but it enables me to better grasp emerging trends, grow as a professional, and produce cutting-edge innovative products.
